Series of sepia-toned photographs showing peaceful sleeping baby swaddled in soft white blanket.

When’s the right time?

Newborn sessions are kind of magical, but also a bit unpredictable. Timing really shapes the kind of photos we get to create together.

If you’re after those dreamy, sleepy, curled-up-in-the-womb images, the best time is between 5 and 10 days old. At this stage, your baby is still super sleepy, flexible, and comfortable being gently wrapped or posed. It makes for a calm, peaceful session with those tiny moments that feel like they belong in a lullaby.

After about 10 days, your baby starts waking up more. They stretch, wriggle, open their eyes, and begin to really connect with the world around them. This phase is just as beautiful, but a bit different. Instead of sleepy poses, we lean into a more lifestyle vibe — cuddles in bed, skin-to-skin with mum or dad, little yawns, big expressions full of personality.

Neither way is “better.” It really depends on what memories you want to hold on to. Want that snuggly, sleepy newborn phase? Earlier is best. Want to capture those first real interactions and cuddles? Waiting a bit longer works beautifully, too.

Here’s a tip: the ideal is to book your newborn session while you’re still pregnant. That way, you can choose two possible dates — so when baby arrives, we have options and can adjust if needed.

Once your baby is born, life gets busy, and if you leave booking to the last minute, you might miss that special newborn window. Plus, your partner might be back at work by then, making scheduling trickier.

Booking ahead means less stress, and more chances to get the best date with your favourite photographer.

We’ll chat about what vibe you want and plan around you and your little one, not a rigid timeline.

Your baby’s first days are precious, and I want to help you remember them exactly the way you want.
